A Way to Overcome Depression
Three years ago we adopted a beautiful three-month-old kitten from your facility. A week or so later we discovered that he had a kennel cough. Not wanting to get more attached to him, I brought him back to the facility. The staff veterinarian came out to speak to me about him. She told me I could return him and get my money back, but she also explained that he would get over it, and he did. It was a difficult decision for me, but I am so blessed that we kept him.
First, I must explain why we got a pet in the first place. I was going through a depression at the time after surgery. I had gone to the doctor and was discussing the depression with him. He looked at my husband and me and asked, "Do you have a pet?" We told him no,that we had pets when our children were young and hadn't wanted the responsibility of a pet. He told us it might help.
My husband and I came home and discussed getting a cat. My husband did not want a pet. I decided to just go and look around. That afternoon I took him back and asked him to look at the kittens. I had seen two that I liked, but did not tell him which ones. As we walked through the kitten area a little gray cat put out its paw and touched his arm. That is the kitten we chose.
I cannot express the joy and happiness that kitten has made in our lines. I cannot imagine our lives without him.

One day while at the shelter to pick up another puppy to foster, I saw her in the medical room and felt so bad for her I said "this ones coming with me too"! Two puppies really are easier than one. So off we went and she has been with me ever since.
Buffy suffered from one of the worst cases of demadex along with a secondary skin infection. Demadex is a type of mange mite that lives in the hair follicles of animals, commonly referred to as the “red mange”. Left untreated, as in Buffy’s case, it can cause sever hair loss and the infection can be fatal. The first picture of Buffy is after a month of treatment, that’s what she looked like the day I took her home with me. So you can image how sick she was when she was first brought into the shelter.
After several months of treatment Buffy looks like a different dog. She is a whopping 9 pounds and most of her fur has grown back. She will always have the scar across her head as a reminder of her traumatic start in life, but it’s hardly noticeable with all the personality bursting out of her. She is just adorable and the perfect bed warmer!
Buffy is a regular attendee at the annual Pet Fests. She will be walking in the Doggie Dash walk/run to raise money for all the animals out there that need our help. If you would like to sponsor her in her effort to raise money please contact us!
......and Buffy now.

Cookies for Canines and Kitties
Julian is already giving back to his community. He had a bake sale and all his proceeds were donated to HEART of CVACF, the shelter's nonprofit organization. Julian's grandmother says he even helps with the baking, cracking eggs and measuring. Julian has a little apple head Chihuahua at home that he loves very much and wants to help the homeless pets at the shelter that aren't as fortunate as his little dog.
"Don't worry, I'll be back", Julian told me as he was waving good-bye after dropping off his bake sale donation. "I'm collecting pennies and soon will have enough to donate."
Every little bit counts. The funds donated help support our foster care program purchasing milk replacer, bottles, and heating pads
